Eczema Atopic Dermatitis

Eczema Atopic Dermatitis

More than 15 million people in the U.S. suffer from eczema atopic dermatitis, with roughly 15% of the population experiencing this skin disorder sometime during childhood. About half of these people grow up to have healthy skin, but may still experience greater sensitivity than normal. The other half continue to suffer from symptoms of eczema into adulthood.

Eczema atopic dermatitis is characterized by red, itchy, sensitive areas of skin that react to an irritant or become inflamed with little warning. The condition is not contagious, but has been linked to allergies like hay fever and asthma. It tends to run in families, suggesting a genetic or heredity factor.

The cause of eczema is not completely understood, but it’s believed that eczema atopic dermatitis develops as a result of skin abnormalities coupled with a problem with the immune system. For those who have atopic dermatitis as an adult, it can almost never be completed cured, but can be safely managed with the right treatment.

Atopic dermatitis accounts for 10 to 20% of the referrals to dermatologists. Dr. Zappi and Dr. Buccheri-Zappi both specialize in alleviating the symptoms of this common disorder.
