Warts Symptoms & Causes

Warts Symptoms & Causes

Warts are an unsightly skin condition caused by the human papilloma virus (HPV). This infectious virus is contagious and can affect any part of the body.

Both children and adults can get warts. In kids, they typically disappear over time, but adult warts are likely to persist and/or multiply over time, requiring treatment by a certified dermatologist.

There are several kinds of warts:

  • Common warts are dome-shaped bumps that can occur almost anywhere, but primarily appear on the hands, fingers, toes, knees, and elbows.
  • Plantar warts are found on the bottom of the foot.
  • Genital warts are a sexually transmitted disease and are highly contagious and must be treated.
  • Flat warts are small and, as the name suggests, flat on top. They can appear in a cluster and are most common on the face and in areas that are shaved often.

Warts are an irritating and embarrassing problem for many people, but they may be easy to eliminate with medical treatment.
