Contact Dermatitis and Eczema
Eczema, also known as dermatitis, is a skin condition characterized by rashes, irritation, itchiness, and sensitivity. It is often caused by allergies, but may also be related to heredity and genes. As one of the most common skin disorders, eczema affects a large percentage of the population. The condition may worsen or improve on its own, but without treatment it can repeatedly flare up for a lifetime.
Dermatitis means inflammation of the skin, and is actually used to describe a number of different problems, from psoriasis to skin cancer. Contact dermatitis, on the other hand, is a specific condition that arises after contact with an allergen, a chemical irritant, or accompanying hay fever or asthma.
There are two main types of contact dermatitis: contact allergic dermatitis and eczema atopic dermatitis. Each of these disorders presents with its own symptoms and will be treated differently by a dermatologist. Although their causes and symptoms differ, both types of dermatitis can be treated once the correct diagnosis has been made.
